There are many bands out there that are placed under the Christian Rock genre, and in case you haven't noticed, being in this catagory means they're automatically judged as -dare I say- 'uncool' or 'stupid'.
I remember watching the Best Songs of the 00's, 'Arms wide open' by Creed was on there, though exactly what the commentators said escapes me, they were basically saying that they didn't really see Creed as a good rock band, but rather saw them only for their Christian belief.
Now I'm not saying this isn't the least bit right, it is, they are religious, but I highly doubt that is all they wish to be known for, when they produce some awesome music anyone can like.
I, myself, have commited this ignorant assumption that if they are labeled Christian rock, it means you're listening to a preacher in sing-song.
Nearly, I missed out on Flyeaf, a band that has more real rock qualities than Shinedown, because I was affraid I'd be buying something my aunt Fannie would like.
Flyleaf has repeatedly said that they are simply a band with Christian views and are not trying to play for one audience in paticular; which should go without saying anyway.
Songs should be taken however one personally interpets it.
Take 'All around me', some people could say this is a song about god or you could say it is about a boyfriend/husand, maybe a passed loved one. The possiblities never cease, as it it should be.
I suppose my point is that there are lots of good music out there, the members may be religious but it doesn't take away from their music.
Here's some good rock bands - with openly Christian members-, but they aren't MercyMe.
DecyferDown.
Skillet.
The Letter Black.
Flyleaf.
We are the fallen.
Fireflight.
Alterbridge.
Creed.
Let's just listen and make music what we want it to be.
